The Revival Of Attica And Cinda Firestone Fox

Cinda Firestone Fox, having enjoyed an extensive and acclaimed career as writer, producer, director, and editor, first enjoyed critical acclaim through the production of the documentary Attica. Based on the prison take over and the subsequent slaughtering at the prison in Attica where 32 prisoners and 11 hostages were left dead; most killed by state police fire. At just 23, Cinda Firestone Fox edited and directed the 80 minute film which looked at events during and after the riots. As well as footage of the prisoners and hostages, the film also includes a stark look at the aftermath and inquiry into the Attica travesty and is widely acclaimed as being an eye-opening account of events.

Despite the documentary itself meeting serious distribution problems, neither the popularity of the film or Cinda’s desire to produce were diminished. The film fell into a degree of obscurity for 30 years, although it did generate a large cult following before the N.Y. Public Library tracked Fox down to her Puerto Rican home to gain permission to rerelease the film. Permission was given and the film, underwritten by New York Women in Film and Television, was released once again to packed audiences in Spring 2006.

As well as gaining yet more acclaim, the rerelease of Attica also led to the revival of Cinda Firestone Fox’s later documentary films. The Trilogy on Aging which featured three films of roughly 45 minutes each depicting various views on and approaches to retirement, has also been rereleased. However, according to Cinda herself it is unlikely to lead to her creating any more documentaries because her heart now lies in the writing of screenplays and musicals.
